Noni Speaks Up – Book Recommendation and Review

Noni Speaks Up

Written by Heather Hartt-Sussman / Illustrated by Geneviève Côté

Tundra Books / Hardcover / 24 Pages / Recommended for children ages 3-7

A super big thank you to Penguin Random House Canada for sending me this adorably positive, empowering, and inspiring book! Noni Speaks Up, written by Heather Hartt-Sussman and illustrated by Geneviève Côté, follows little Noni as she struggles with the decision to speak up when she sees a classmate being bullied. I thoroughly enjoyed the very important message conveyed in this story as well as the wonderful illustrations!

What I Liked

I LOVED that this book included such an encouraging depiction of (what I consider to be) a very real and relatable situation that kids oftentimes find themselves in. Hartt-Sussman captured the emotion, both positive and negative, involved in Noni’s internal struggle and Côté’s delightful watercolor illustrations topped it all off in a wonderfully whimsical display. Plus! Girl Power 😀 You go, Noni!

Although a children’s book, Noni’s story also spoke to me as an adult and truly reiterated the importance of speaking up for yourself and for others. We’re never too old for reminders like this one.

What I Liked A Little Less

Nothing! Seriously – there was nothing I didn’t like. Pertinent, real-life situation? Check. Cheerful art? Check. Empowering life lesson? Check!

Overall Score

Noni Speaks Up gets 5/5 stars! I wholeheartedly recommend this book for those of you who have youngsters – whether they’re your kids, your siblings, little cousins, grandkids, etc. This would be a perfect book to read to/with them and I have no doubt that all readers will come away from story time feeling confident and courageous in their ability to speak up J Definitely check this out and if you enjoy it, Hartt-Sussman and Côté have two more stories: Noni Says No and Noni Is Nervous. Heartwarming tales and personal development all wrapped up in bright and colorful illustrations? Yes, please! Happy reading, everyone!
